El Paso Police seeing upward trend of auto theft this year, hosts Vehicle Theft Prevention Event

EL PASO, Texas – The El Paso Police Department’s Auto Theft Task Force holds a vehicle theft prevention event to combat the upward trend of auto theft in the Borderland.

Officials said El Paso Police officials with the auto theft task force said the city is up 20% in auto thefts from where we were this time last year.

“We've got almost 500 vehicles stolen. So far, we're barely into April,” he said.

VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) Etching is a process in which the vehicle’s identification number is permanently etched into the glass of the vehicle.

“This makes it less valuable to a thief because it'll be very difficult for them to sell those parts. And it's also worth a 10% discount on your theft coverage of your vehicle. If you have a discount still available to you,” said Stephen Plummer, El Paso Police Department’s Auto Theft Task Force.

This is an estimated $100.00-$300.00 value. VIN Etching is offered Free of charge by the El Paso Police Department’s Auto Theft Task Force.
