May 9 is National Fentanyl Awareness Day

MGN

EL PASO, Texas (KVIA) -- May 9 is National Fentanyl Awareness Day and the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) wants you to know what to look out for.

According to the DEA, deaths of Americans under the age of 50 involving illicit fentanyl are greater than any other cause of death, and is driving the recent increase in overdose deaths in the U.S.

The DEA warns against consuming any pills or powders unless you got it from a pharmacy. Otherwise, it may contain a lethal dose of fentanyl. Common examples of pills that may be laced with fentanyl are Oxycontin, Percocet, and Xanax, and you can't tell which pills contain a lethal amount of fentanyl. Experts say the drug is odorless, tasteless, and extremely potent.

The DEA is asking that you spread the word so that more people can be aware of the dangers of fentanyl. To do so, you can use hashtags like '#NationalFentanylAwarenessDay' and '#JustSayKNOW.'
