EL PASO, Texas (KVIA) - The Texas Department of Public Safety's Honor Guard State Drill Team won 1st Place in a national competition.

The Steve Young National Honor Guard Exhibition and Tributes is an opportunity for law enforcement agencies from across the country to perform various ceremonies and tributes.

It is an annual event held in Washington, D.C. during National Police Week.

This year's top ranking was earned by the Texas Department of Public Safety.

During the event the honor guard team goes through an inspection drill, where the team leader is inspected for proper dress and military stance and then the team is inspected for the same standards.

After the inspections the flags are presented to the flag bearers in order to post colors. Posting colors means the guard team moves the American Flag, state flag, service flag, and unit flags from the carried position to into a stand.

The exhibition phase is the final event, the team is judged on choreography, difficulty, and team uniformity.

The Texas Department of Public Safety and Drums placed third in their category.
