California city cancels July Fourth fireworks as firefighters battle flames amid hot weather

OROVILLE, Calif. (AP) — Officials in a Northern California community have canceled an annual Fourth of July fireworks celebration as thousands of residents remain displaced while crews battle a growing wildfire amid extreme heat. California State Parks made the announcement, citing public safety concerns. The Thompson Fire sent up a huge plume of smoke again Wednesday after growing to more than 5.5 square miles. It broke out the day before about 70 miles north of Sacramento in and around Oroville. At least three homes have been destroyed. There is no word of any injuries so far, and the cause is being investigated.
