Mali troops put down a deadly militant attack in the capital

Associated Press

BAMAKO, Mali (AP) — Army troops have subdued Islamic militants who attacked a military training camp and the airport in Mali’s capital, but some soldiers were killed. The army chief of staff said the militants tried to infiltrate the Faladie gendarme school in Bamako and also targeted the airport in Tuesday’s attack. The army said in a statement there were lives lost on the army’s side but did not say how many. The airport was shut down temporarily but reopened later in the day. The al-Qaida-linked militant group JNIM claimed responsibility for the attacks. Mali, along with its neighbors Burkina Faso and Niger, have been battling insurgencies, and all three nations had had military coups in recent years.
