Arrest made after chase leads to standoff with wanted fugitive at home north of Las Cruces
LAS CRUCES, New Mexico -- An arrest was made Wednesday afternoon ending a standoff involving a wanted fugitive who had barricaded himself in a home north of Las Cruces following a police chase, authorities said.
Leo Leroy Robledo, 36, was facing a list of charges that included three felonies and seven misdemeanors.
According to police, Robledo allegedly assaulted a relative at his home in the 2200 block of Dona Ana Road about 8:30 a.m., then stole a neighbor's pickup truck and led authorities on a chase, before abandoning the vehicle and breaking into a house in the 5000 block of Yuma Street where he barricaded himself inside.
The standoff involving Las Cruces police SWAT and Dona Ana County Sheriff’s deputies unfolded over hours. It ended about 1:30 p.m. when officers used robots, pepper gas and a police dog to subdue Robledo and take him into custody.
A police spokesman said no major injuries occurred, although Robledo was being treated at a local hospital for minor injuries from the incident.
Once he's released from the hospital, police said he’ll be booked into the Dona Ana County Detention Center without bond.
The full list of charges against Robledo included unlawful taking of a motor vehicle, breaking and entering, criminal damage to property, battery on a household member, assault against a household member, assault against a peace officer, criminal damage to property, and resisting or evading a peace officer.
