SWAT standoff after officer shoots at man with knife in Lower Valley ends hours later with arrest
EL PASO, Texas -- An El Paso police SWAT team standoff that began Friday night in a Lower Valley neighborhood finally ended hours later into early Saturday with the arrest of an injured man.
It began after an officer pulled his gun and fired at a 29-year-old man who reportedly was armed with a knife in the 7800 block of Broadway, a police spokesman said.
It was initially unknown if the man was struck by the gunshots as he retreated into a home where he barricaded himself around 6 p.m., the spokesman said.
However, when the man was eventually taken into custody about 4:30 a.m. Saturday, authorities he had been injured and was taken to Del Sol Medical Center for treatment.
The man, whose identity was not released, was charged with aggravated assault of a police officer. Authorities said he also had a prior warrant for resisting arrest.
The standoff ensued when officers originally went to that Lower Valley location to serve an emergency detention order, police said. The details behind the issuance of that order were not immediately disclosed.
