Family argument ends with man shot, wounded in far east El Paso
EL PASO, Texas -- One person was hospitalized and two others taken into custody after late night gunshots rang out in front of a home in a far east El Paso neighborhood, but it appeared Wednesday that no charges would be filed in the case.
El Paso police and Texas Department of Public Safety troopers found the victim after responding to multiple calls reporting shots fired at 14188 Rattler Point Drive just after 10 p.m. Tuesday.
"Two men and one woman were involved in an argument when one of the men produced a gun and shots were fired," said Sgt. Enrique Carrillo, who also on Wednesday described the shooting as a "family violence" incident.
The man who was shot was taken by ambulance to a local hospital in serious condition, according to fire department dispatchers. Police on Wednesday said the victim suffered a gunshot wound to the abdomen and it was not life-threatening.
An ABC-7 photographer at the scene Tuesday night observed police initially taking a woman in her late 20s or early 30s into custody. The handcuffed woman was placed in a police vehicle with paper bags covering her hands, presumably to preserve any gunshot residue evidence for testing - a standard law enforcement technique.
The ABC-7 crew later saw a second person taken into custody. Officers appeared to inspect the man's hands before placing him in handcuffs and taking him away.
However, Carillo on Wednesday said that "none of the involved parties wished to file charges for the assault." No identities of the trio involved in the incident were released.
Residents living in the neighborhood told ABC-7 that they heard several gunshots fired late Tuesday night, then a short time later heard police over a loudspeaker telling someone to drop their weapon.
