East El Paso man arrested for child pornography after feds, bomb squad raid home
UPDATE, March 5: Federal authorities on Friday confirmed the arrest of an east El Paso man whose home was searched by government agents and examined by a police bomb squad earlier in the week.
U.S. Homeland Security investigators said Jason Wesley Matthews, 45, was taken into custody on child pornography charges. A detention hearing in federal court was scheduled for this coming Monday.
A statement issued Friday by Homeland Security outlined what the search of Matthews home in the 3500 block of Proud Eagle Way allegedly uncovered.
"A preliminary forensic review of a computer and other devices seized revealed images of child exploitation... the files included images of children, as young as toddlers, engaged in various sexual acts and torture," it said.
ORIGINAL REPORT, March 2: EL PASO, Texas -- El Paso police on Tuesday dispatched a bomb squad to an east El Paso neighborhood as part of a federal investigation.
Police, in a tweet, said Homeland Security investigators requested the assistance of the bomb squad in the 3500 block of Proud Eagle Drive.
A Homeland Security spokesperson told ABC-7 that federal agents had executed a search warrant at a home there "as part of an ongoing criminal investigation."
Authorities did not indicate the nature of the investigation, but there was a heavy police presence in the neighborhood, including Homeland Security Investigations, Texas Department of Public Safety and El Paso police.
No further details were immediately available.
