ORIGINAL REPORT, March 8: EL PASO, Texas -- A SWAT standoff on Monday afternoon ended after a barricaded father safely released his two children, ages 3 and 6, from an east El Paso home before surrendering to authorities.

Police said the standoff had been triggered by a domestic disturbance inside the home in the the 2200 block of Cumbre Negra.

A police spokesman said events unfolded while the 6-year-old was participating in online learning and told the teacher that dad was assaulting mom; the teacher called 911.

The mother was able to get out of the house, police said, but the father held the two children inside.

In addition to dispatching SWAT, police also sent a crisis management team to negotiate with the man, who finally surrendered around 2:30 p.m.

Police said the man, whose name was not immediately released, was being charged with assault.
