Caught on video: Gunfire at scene of Las Cruces ‘officer-involved incident’ that hurt man and officer
LAS CRUCES, New Mexico -- What police described as "officer-involved incident" in downtown Las Cruces near a post office on Thursday morning left both a man and an officer injured following gunfire that was captured on video. (You can view it in the video player above.)
A Las Cruces police spokesman told ABC-7 that the incident involved a police unit and another vehicle, but declined to provide further details.
The Associated Press quoted police as saying the incident "apparently began with a domestic relations matter of some sort" and ended with a crash and gunfire.
The sound of gunfire and police activity near the intersection of Campo Street and East Hadley Avenue about 9 a.m. was captured on video by eyewitness Edgar Reyes who was working on a painting job nearby. (You can view it in the video player at the top of this article.)
Police said the injured man was taken to a local hospital, where there was no immediate word on his condition. The officer had what were described by police as "relatively minor injuries."
Authorities said Campo Street, from East Picacho Avenue to Las Cruces Avenue, would be closed for most of the day as well as Hadley Avenue from Church Street to North San Pedro Street - as part of the ongoing investigation into the incident.
A police spokesman acknowledged this was the latest of several officer-involved incidents to occur in Las Cruces since January, but added that each incident has been different and none involved a common thread or similar situations.
Police said this latest incident would be investigated by a task force made up of multiple law enforcement agencies.
