Dona Ana County jail fight between 2 inmates leaves 1 dead

LAS CRUCES, New Mexico -- A fight between Dona Ana County Detention Center inmates, identified as 27-year-old Corey Lee Willis and 40-year-old Samuel Enriquez, has left Willis dead.

According to an email from Dona Ana Detention Center Director and Warden Bryan Baker, aggravated battery charges were filed against Enriquez and he expects them to be upgraded to homicide.

Enriquez has been in the Detention Center since 2019 as he awaits trial on charges of felony aggravated battery and tampering with evidence.

Willis had been in the jail since May 8 on charges of concealing identity, a petty misdemeanor.

The fight took place on May 27 and Willis later died from his injuries at University Medical Center in El Paso.
