Anthony police warn of ‘armed & dangerous’ suspect sought in uncle’s murder
UPDATE: ANTHONY, New Mexico — Anthony police on Sunday identified both Saturday's deadly stabbing victim and the man being sought for his murder; they asked for the public's help in locating the suspect who is "armed and should be considered dangerous."
Police said 34-year-old Gumaro Enrique Vega was wanted in the killing of his uncle, 50-year-old Albaro Garcia - who was found stabbed multiple times at Vega's residence in the 900 block of Charles Avenue about 10:30 a.m. Saturday.
Authorities said an arrest warrant had been issued for Vega charging him with murder, although investigators didn't reveal a motive for the slaying.
Vega was described by police as 6-feet-3-inches tall and weighing approximately 300 lbs.; he is bald with brown eyes and has an “S” tattoo on the top right side of his head and brow.
Authorities said anyone who spots Vega shouldn't approach him, but rather should immediately call 911.
ORIGINAL REPORT: ANTHONY, New Mexico — Numerous police agencies converged on the scene of a deadly stabbing in Anthony on Saturday afternoon and authorities then surrounded a nearby home where the suspect was thought to be holed up inside.
The stabbing scene was at Charles and Van Buren avenues, where a man in his 50s was found dead, while the standoff unfolded on nearby Ruth Avenue - where a SWAT team and bomb squad were observed in action.
Officers from the Anthony Police Department and New Mexico State Police along with Dona Ana County Sheriff's deputies finally cleared the standoff scene hours after the stabbing occurred, with no apparent sign of the suspect who remained on the loose.
No further details were immediately available, with the Anthony police chief on Saturday night saying it continued to be "an active investigation."
