El Paso man arrested in Lower Valley shooting with El Paso Police officer

UPDATE (July 9, 2025): El Paso Police have now arrested Paul Ivan Gonzalez after his release from the hospital on Tuesday. Gonzalez is charged with aggravated assault on a public servant and two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. He was booked into the El Paso County Jail on a total bond of $350,000. The investigation into the crime continues.

UPDATE (June 24, 2025): El Paso Police just identified the man injured in the shooting on Stiles Drive in the Lower Valley last night. They say that Leonardo Martinez, 46, suffered injuries and received medical treatment at a local hospital after the shooting.

Investigators say Paul Ivan Gonzalez, 32, shot Martinez, an employee at the Smurfit Westrock El Paso Container Plant. Employees then evacuated the plant, which is located on the 7300 block of Stiles Drive. When officers arrived, they found Gonzalez in the parking lot. Officials say that Gonzalez opened fire. "During an encounter with officers he was shot," a police spokesperson explained. Emergency crews took Gonzalez to a local hospital for treatment.

Officials say that no officers were reported injured during this incident. The El Paso Police Department Internal Affairs Shooting Review Team and the Texas Rangers are now looking into the incident. Officials expect to charge Gonzalez once he is released from the hospital.

UPDATE: Two people were taken to the hospital with serious injuries.

Police say they were called to the scene at 11:30 p.m. Monday night after reports of someone with a gun.

When officials got there, they found an armed person inside the facility.

While investigating the scene, a 46-year-old man was shot. It is important to say he was not shot by police. That man is a manager of the facility.

After, officers found a person with a gun inside the building. That's when officers fired at the suspect.

Both the manager and the suspect were taken to the hospital in stable but critical condition.

EL PASO, Texas (KVIA) -- Authorities are responding to a shooting involving a police officer in the Lower Valley.

The Crimes Against Persons Unit is responding to the 7300 block of Stiles Dr., between North Loop and Alameda.
