A Norwegian man needed a hobby. His new metal detector found a showy 1,500-year-old gold necklace

COPENHAGEN, Denmark (AP) — A Norwegian man using a metal detector has found nine pendants, three rings and 10 gold pearls someone might have worn as showy jewelry 1,500 years ago. The gold pendants and pearls were part of a necklace made by skilled jewelers. The thin pendants date from around A.D. 500, a time of high migration in Europe. The scene on them is typical of such pendants, which often depict the Norse god Odin healing a sick horse. Norwegian experts say the man’s find is unusual and no similar gold finds have been made since the 19th century. The man found the gold this summer on the southern island of Rennesoey, but he can’t keep it. Norwegian law says objects that old are state property.
