Man arrested in deadly drunk driving crash as El Paso corrections officer killed is laid to rest

El Paso Police said Monday they had arrested a man who was allegedly drunk when he was involved in a car crash that killed an El Paso County corrections officer.

Police booked 25-year-old Erick Angel Ortiz into the El Paso County Detention Facility. Police said after the crash that Ortiz was facing a charge of intoxication manslaughter, but couldn’t book him until after he was released from the hospital on Friday.

Police said Ortiz was allegedly drunk when he crashed his car into another driven by 30-year-old Joseph Gomez. Gomez was taken to the hospital where he later died.

Gomez was an El Paso County corrections officer and a youth football coach. He was laid to rest Monday at Evergreen Cemetery East.

Ortiz was being held under a $100,000 bond.
