Former El Paso police officer pleads guilty in deadly hit-and-run, will spend 8 years in prison

A former El Paso police officer is going to spend eight years in prison for a deadly hit-and-run.

Roberto Garcia pleaded guilty Tuesday to a charge of accident involving death.

He was an 18-year veteran with the El Paso Police Department when he was arrested for the New Year’s Day fatality in 2018.

The collision in far west El Paso killed 37-year-old Eduardo Vasquez.

Garcia was driving his personal car when he struck and killed Vasquez who was walking along the shoulder of Interstate 10 near Vinton.

Officials said Garcia then fled the scene.

He was arrested in September of last year after authorities spent nine months investigating the deadly hit-and-run.
