Alleged drunk driver facing manslaughter, assault charges for deadly chain-reaction crash on I-10 at Loop 375
EL PASO, Texas -- An SUV driver alleged to have been drunk when he slammed into a semi-truck and triggered a deadly chain-reaction incident along Interstate 10 at Loop 375 earlier this week has been arrested on multiple charges.
Martin Castaneda, 24, was being held Thursday on $350,000 bond in the El Paso County Detention Facility on one count each of intoxicated manslaughter and intoxicated assault.
Police said officers arrested Castaneda on Wednesday afternoon as he was being released from the hospital.
Monday night's crash on Interstate 10 west at the Loop 375 north interchange killed one man and seriously injured another.
Investigators said the two victims were outside assisting the driver of a semi that was stopped on a ramp when an SUV that had been "weaving in and out of lanes" crashed into the semi and a pickup parked in front of it.
That pickup truck then struck the men, throwing them off the overpass; first responders arrived to find 35-year-old Carlos Lechuga and 33-year-old Hector Mendoza lying on the ground four stories below.
Lechuga died the day after the crash at Del Sol Hospital, where Mendoza was treated for serious injuries.
