Man arrested after SWAT standoff at Las Cruces hotel

LAS CRUCES, New Mexico -- A 22-year-old man barricaded himself inside a Las Cruces hotel room Wednesday triggering a standoff with police who were trying to serve a warrant.

A SWAT team was deployed at the WoodSpring Suites hotel at 2080 S. Triviz Drive around 11 a.m. as other nearby rooms in the hotel were evacuated.

The standoff ensued until about 1 p.m. when police said the man, identified as Oscar Angel Valenzuela, was taken into custody.

A police spokesman said Valenzuela was wanted on a warrant for three counts of violating terms of his probation.

Police suspected he might have been armed, so officers shut down a several block radius along S. Triviz Drive, about a quarter-mile from New Mexico State University, throughout the standoff.
