Teens arrested for man’s murder at Las Cruces house party

UPDATE, Aug. 3: Police announced the arrests Tuesday of two Las Cruces teenagers for a weekend shooting death that occurred at a house party.

Isaiah James William Taylor, 19, and a 17-year-old boy whose name wasn't released, were both charged with an open count of murder, two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and one count each of shooting at a house.

The pair were being held without bond at the Dona Ana County Detention Center on those charges stemming from the death of 23-year-old Nicodemus “Nico” Gonzales.

Gonzales was found dead of a gunshot wound by officers who responded to reports of shots fired at a "loud party" at a home in the 1800 block of Chaparro Street in Las Cruces early Saturday.

UPDATE, Aug. 2: Police on Monday identified the shooting victim killed at a weekend party in Las Cruces.

Authorities said 23-year-old Nicodemus “Nico” Gonzales died of at least one, if not multiple, bullet wounds when shots were fired at a "loud party" in the 1800 block of Chaparro Street early Saturday.

No arrests had been made as of Monday morning, but detectives said they had interviewed some of the party-goers as they worked to piece together exactly what happened.

ORIGINAL REPORT, July 31: LAS CRUCES, New Mexico — Las Cruces Police said a man was shot and killed early Saturday during a party.

It happened in the 1800 block of Chaparro Street around 3:30 a.m.

Officers said they found the victim dead from at least one gunshot wound after responding to reports of shots fired at a party.

A neighborhood resident said the man shot was a New Mexico State University student in his 20s, although authorities didn't immediately confirm that information.

There was no word of any arrests and investigators indicated they were working to determine the circumstances surrounding that shooting.
