Las Cruces ‘secret prom’ prompts examination of prom plans for other Borderland schools
EL PASO, Texas -- With word of a so-called "secret prom" taking place involving students from Mayfield High School in Las Cruces, prompting a temporary return to remote learning due to Covid-19 concerns, some have wondered what the official prom plans are - if any - for other Borderland area school districts.
According to spokespeople from the districts, El Paso ISD and Ysleta ISD will not be holding proms; Soccorro ISD will have a prom, but it will be on a smaller scale; and San Elizario ISD is undecided.
Meantime, an El Paso event venue has announced it's hosting a "Prom Under The Stars" on the evening of May 7 for local high school students who don't have an official school prom to attend.
"We started getting a lot of calls from parents and students that really wanted to host a prom,” said Abby Garcia, an event coordinator at Grace Gardens. “We decided to go ahead and host a prom for them."
The prom will be held outdoors, with 2 pavilions, dance floors and DJ’s. The venue told ABC-7 there will be sanitizing stations and temperature checks. Face masks, however, will not be mandatory.
"We're leaving it up to every guest individually,” Garcia said. “We are recommending it.”
Grace Gardens can accommodate 3,000 guests - but Garcia said that to ensure the health and safety of everyone during the pandemic, they will only be allowing about 1,000 students.
