GiGi’s Playhouse El Paso welcomes UTEP’s president, for special story time event

KVIA

EL PASO, Texas -- A new innovative program to help children with disabilities was launched Saturday morning at GiGi's playhouse.

GiGi's playhouse is an achievement center for children and adults with down syndrome.

The event included story time with UTEP President, Dr. Wilson which also featured a book giveaway for the children who attended the event.

This new program is designed to foster an inclusive community by promoting literacy and a love for reading in a setting that provides opportunities for students with down syndrome to participate alongside peers who do not have disabilities.

The book helps children learn there that there is nothing wrong with being different from your peers.

"If we spend time looking for people who are exactly like us we'll miss out on friendship and I think for children who have down-syndrome sometimes feeling different is hard and its a message not only for the children with down syndrome but also their friends who may not have down syndrome but who can be their friends," said Dr. Wilson.
