El Paso vigil for migrants who risked everything to enter US

EL PASO, Texas --

Annunciation House will host a vigil for the victims who died in a trailer near San Antonio last week.

The vigil will acknowledge the lives lost and call for an end to policies like Title 42.

Annunciation House says policies like Title 42 lead migrants to risk their lives trying to get into the United States. ABC-7 has reported on the dangers of people trying to sneak into the country.

Some end up drowning in our canals. Some are severely injured falling off the border wall.

ABC-7 spoke with former US marshal Robert Almonte about the dangers of human smuggling. He’s seen how bad it can be firsthand. He believes more needs to be done at the border to avoid more tragedies like what happened in San Antonio.

“When are we going to get upset? When are we going to get mad enough to do something about this? Our government needs to put more pressure on the Mexican government. The other thing our government needs to do is we need to send more resources to the border. We need to flood the border with federal agents and task force officers. At the port of entries to be inspecting these vehicles. Check the commercial vehicle. Check all of them,” said Almonte.

In Almonte's experience, migrants are willing to risk it all to get into this country.
