Texas reports 2nd highest day for new virus cases, with 10 days of record hospitalizations
AUSTIN, Texas — The state of Texas reported the second-highest number of new coronavirus cases Sunday after setting a record Saturday.
Health officials on Sunday reported more than 3,800 newly confirmed cases and 17 additional deaths due to Covid-19.
There were at least 111,601 total cases on Sunday and 2,182 deaths, an increase of 3,866 from the 107,735 cases reported Saturday, and 2,182 deaths compared to 2,165 reported a day earlier.
El Paso contributed to the state’s caseload with 148 new cases on Sunday, part of a weekend spike that produced 310 new infections.
Health officials in Texas also reported the tenth consecutive day of record-high hospitalizations for the virus, with 3,409 people hospitalized Sunday.
An estimated 68,499 people across Texas have recovered from the virus, while there were 40,920 active cases.
The actual number of people who have contracted the virus that is likely higher than the official data because many people have not been tested and studies indicate that people can be infected and not feel sick.
For some people, the coronavirus causes mild or moderate symptoms that clear up within weeks. But for others, the highly contagious virus can cause severe illness, including pneumonia, and be fatal.
