4 hurt in Texas school shooting, suspected student gunman captured
UPDATE: ARLINGTON, Texas — Police in Texas have arrested a student suspected of opening fire during a fight at his Dallas-area high school, leaving four people injured.
Police said 18-year-old Timothy George Simpkins fled from Timberview High School in Arlington and drove away in a 2018 silver Dodge Charger after the Wednesday morning shooting. He was taken into custody by officers hours later.
Authorities said one of the victims, a 15-year-old student, was in critical condition at a hospital. Another person who was hurt, a 25-year-old man, was in good condition while a third person, a teenage female, suffered minor abrasions and was expected to be released from the hospital later Wednesday. The fourth person, a pregnant woman who was hurt in a fall, did not require treatment at a hospital.
Simpkins has been charged with multiple counts of aggravated assault with a gun and was being held on $75,000 bail in the Arlington jail.
Investigators believe the suspect and another student got into a fight and it prompted the shooting, according to Arlington assistant police chief Kevin Kolbye.
Police said they did recover a .45 caliber weapon near the scene, although the federal Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) was still trying to determine whether it was the one used in the shooting.
ORIGINAL REPORT: ARLINGTON, Texas -- Four people were hurt in a shooting at Timberview High School in Arlington on Thursday morning, authorities said.
The suspect, a student, fled the scene and is at large, authorities said, adding that this was not a random act of violence. Officials indicated the student was involved in a fight and a drew a weapon.
Police identified the suspect as 18-year old Timothy George Simpkins, who may be driving a 2018 Silver Dodge Charger with license plate PFY-6260. Authorities said he should be considered armed and dangerous and urged anyone who spots him to call 911 immediately.
Two of the victims suffered gunshot wounds, police said. Three of the four victims were hospitalized.
Three victims were students and one was an adult who may have been a teacher, police said.
The "all clear" was given at the school following a lockdown. Students were escorted to another building to be reunited with their families, the Mansfield Independent School District said.
Federal ATF officials were at the scene.
The school has about 1,900 students and serves grades nine through 12.
Arlington is located between Fort Worth and Dallas.
