El Paso first responders see slight uptick in heat-related illness calls

EL PASO, Texas -- With several days of triple digits in the forecast, El Paso Fire crews have seen an increase in heat-related illness calls.

Emergency crews have responded to 40 calls since May 1 compared to 19 the same time last year. Most of the patients are adults. The number could increase as the summer season continues.

A spokesperson for the El Paso Fire Department said calls vary year to year depending on how early the Borderland starts to see extreme heat.

The Extreme Weather Task Force is also seeing an increase in requests for fans. More than 170 requests were put in over the span of three brining the total of requests up close to 200 since their summer campaign kicked off. A spokesperson is urging El Pasoans to use the Buddy System and look out for those most vulnerable.

A local doctor ABC-7 spoke to said it's important to be aware of the signs and symptoms of heat-related illnesses.

"If you're getting dehydrated, look at the color of your urine. The darker the color of your urine, that's a sign of increasing dehydration," said Dr. Stephen Flaherty at Del Sol Medical Center. "As it starts to get tea or Coca-Cola color that becomes dangerous and is a sign that you're dehydrated. Other signs (include) lethargy, nausea and vomiting.

Here are some other signs to keep in mind:

  • heavy sweating, cold, pale and clammy skin
  • a fast or weak pulse
  • muscle cramps
  • dizziness, headaches and fainting

Residents in need of a fan for their homes can request one for free by dialing 2-1-1. The Extreme Weather Task Force is asking for fan donations to meet the demand. They will be accepted at any El Paso and Horizon Fire Stations.
