My fair lady: A look into the Southern New Mexico State Fair from a woman who’s made it her life

SOUTHERN NEW MEXICO --- Barbara Sloan-Lacey fell in love twice twenty years ago at the Southern New Mexico State Fair and Rodeo.

First, she fell in love with Larry when the two attended the Frazier Show Carnival. Then, Barbara fell in love with the carnival itself.

The pair traveled the country - one of the places they enjoyed most was visiting the Navajo Nation. Throughout the years, Larry would run the carnival, and the two would come to see the carnival workers as members of their chosen family.

Larry died due to complications with COVID. But Babara continues their work. She'll be working the rides this weekend at the fair, alongside the stunts, puppy pals, and all-you-can-eat food.

The Southern New Mexico State Fair and Rodeo started Wednesday and will be open through Sunday, Oct. 2.

Below is a schedule of events for the fair and rodeo.

  • Thursday, September 29- 8:30 AM to 9:00 PM
  • Friday September 30- 10:00 AM to 10:00 PM
  • Saturday, October 1- 10:00 AM to 10:00 PM
