Cielo Vista mall remains blocked off by law enforcement

EL PASO, Texas (KVIA) -- More than 70 mass shootings have occurred in the U.S. in 2023 so far. That's according to Gun Violence Archive, which defines a mass shooting as one with at least four people killed or injured, not including the shooter. 

Just after 5 pm yesterday police responded to the reports of the shooting at Cielo Vista Mall

Two people were taken into custody after the gunfire inside the Cielo Vista Mall, Interim El Paso Police Chief Peter Pacillas said Wednesday night. One person has died and three other people were taken to the hospital.

The gunman was taken down quickly by an off-duty police officer who was working security at a store in the mall.

According to law enforcement, the Cielo Vista Mall is an active crime scene and will remain locked down until the investigation is completed.

Vehicles at the mall will remain there for some time, up to 18 hours.
