El Paso school districts increase safety measures amid migrant surge

EL PASO, Texas (KVIA) – As the migrant surge continues to impact the borderland, and with numbers only expected to rise after the lifting of Title 42, some El Paso school districts are now increasing safety precautions.

Parents from the El Paso Independent School District told ABC-7 the district has been sending out notifications on their safety protocols.

An EPISD spokesperson sent this statement: “El Paso ISD Police is collaborating with all local law enforcement agencies through the Office of Emergency Management and the activation of the Emergency Operations Center. Our officers have actively patrolled and maintained a presence at campuses near the border throughout the evolution of the situation surrounding Title 42. The safety and security of our students, staff and facilities is our highest priority.”

Ysleta ISD said they are aware of the rising numbers of migrants at the border, and are also working closely with federal, state, and local law enforcement to ensure campuses remain safe.

YISD said they will have additional security officers monitoring schools to ensure there are no unauthorized persons on campus and that increased security presence will continue until further notice.

“Safety is the #1 priority at Ysleta ISD, and we will continue to take every precaution to protect our students & staff and maintain the security of our schools.”

Socorro ISD said they have not had any encounters of migrants on SISD campuses, but will also increase their police presence.

“As a precaution, district police last week increased the presence of officers in our communities near the border and continue coordination with partner law enforcement agencies to keep our schools and community safe,” said a spokesperson for SISD.
