LAS CRUCES, New Mexico -- Mike Peake has been suspended indefinitely from the New Mexico State Men's Basketball team following his involvement in a deadly shooting on the UNM campus.

Peake's suspension was first reported by Jason Groves from the Las Cruces Sun News, and ABC-7 has since confirmed the news with Athletic Director Mario Moccia.

Moccia wouldn't get into specifics because there is an ongoing investigation involving law enforcement and the university disciplinary process.

"Today we are just announcing that there is an indefinite suspension from that specific student-athlete Mike Peake," Moccia said. "If people want to criticize the timing that's fine they can criticize me, while I can't get into the specifics from a health standpoint but when student athletes are in the hospital undergoing multiple procedures, I just personally don't believe that is the best time to make those kinds of announcements, there's a time and a place and today was that time and place."

Moccia said he spoke to head coach Greg Heiar about the proper actions to take and that Heiar agreed with the decision to suspend Peake indefinitely.

While Peake is suspended from the team, Moccia said he is still a student at New Mexico State University.

The suspension comes after Peake took a gun on the team bus as they traveled to Albuquerque for their game against UNM.

The night before the game on Nov. 19 police say Peake was lured to the UNM campus to meet up with a 17-year-old girl. There, police say he was ambushed by three people, including 19-year-old Brandon Travis.

According to police, Travis shot Peake in the leg, and Peake fired back, ultimately killing Travis.
