Former NMSU basketball player Deshawndre Washington hit with additional charges in hazing scandal

LAS CRUCES, New Mexico (KVIA) -- An amended grand jury indictment has listed two new charges against former NMSU basketball player Deshawndre Washington, who was already facing 13 charges for his role in the 2022 men's basketball team hazing scandal.

According to court documents obtained by ABC-7, two new counts of false imprisonment have been added to the list of charges, which is a fourth degree felony in the state of New Mexico.

The charges also involve a new victim in the case, another former NMSU basketball player.

ABC-7 is choosing not to name him at this time.

This comes just weeks after several other major developments related to case unfolded.

Back in December, Kim Aiken Jr., one of the three players originally charged alongside Washington, took a plea deal to testify against him.

Doctor Bradley, the third player involved, took a similar plea back in October to also testify against Washington.

Just days after Aiken Jr. Reached a plea, the NMDOJ released their investigation findings into the hazing scandal, which led to NMSU athletic director Mario Moccia being fired at the beginning of January.

Joleen Youngers, the lawyer representing victims in one of the civil cases against NMSU, applauds the new charges.

“We continue to be pleased with the AG's office, as far as they have taken what happened to our clients very seriously, and they continue to vigorously prosecute the case against Deshawndre Washington," she told ABC-7 over the phone Monday.

In a statement sent to ABC-7, a spokesperson for the New Mexico Attorney General’s office said "the NMSOJ looks forward to presenting its case to a jury and securing justice for the victims.“

Washington’s trial is set to take place in Las Cruces in April.
