Motorcyclist dies from injuries suffered in weekend crash in downtown El Paso

EL PASO, Texas - A motorcyclist who was rushed to the hospital with life-threatening injuries after a crash in downtown El Paso over the weekend has now died, police said Tuesday.

According to police, 58 –year old Arturo Lopez Jr. of El Paso became the city’s 11th traffic fatality of the year when he died on Monday at University Medical Center.

He lost control of his motorcycle along a curve and crashed into a curb along the 700 block of W. Paisano Drive at Coldwell Street near Union Plaza on Saturday night, investigators said.

Police indicated Lopez wasn't wearing a helmet when he was thrown from the motorcycle and suffered head injuries.

Traffic deaths so far this year have nearly doubled when compared to last year at this time, when police said there were just six fatalities.
