Police say driver was intoxicated when he ran woman over and crashed into Lower Valley apartment building

UPDATE, Nov. 18: A 24-year-old El Paso man is believed to have been intoxicated when his SUV ran over a pedestrian and then crashed into a Lower Valley apartment building, investigators said Thursday.

Juset DeSantiago was booked into the downtown jail following his release from Del Sol Medical Center, where he was treated for a small spinal fracture resulting from Wednesday's crash at 8615 San Juan Lane; medics said they found him passed out behind his vehicle following the crash.

Police said the woman he ran over, 47-year-old Erika Cervantes of Socorro, remained hospitalized Thursday at University Medical Center in critical condition.

DeSantiago was being held on $500 bond on drug possession charges; police said an intoxication assault charge was pending.

ORIGINAL REPORT, Nov. 17: EL PASO, Texas -- Two people were seriously injured Wednesday morning when they were struck by a vehicle in the Lower Valley.

It happened about 11 a.m. in the 8600 block of San Juan Lane at Independence Drive.

First-responders said two victims were taken by ambulances to local hospitals, both were listed in serious condition.

Police were investigating the incident to determine exactly what happened, but the car crashed into a building after striking the pedestrians.
