Former Rep. Norma Chavez to announce candidacy for District 77 seat

EL PASO, Texas (KVIA) -- Former state Representative Norma Chavez will announce her campaign for the Texas District 77 race on Wednesday.

Chavez served as representative for District 76 from 1997 to 2011. She will now run against Vince Perez and Alexsandra Annello for the District 77 seat, currently held by Lina Ortega. The trio will appear on the ballot of the March 5, 2024 democratic primary. The general election is scheduled for November of 2024.

District 77 encompasses parts of southern West El Paso, Downtown, Central, and most of the Lower Valley.

Chavez will host a campaign kickoff event November 1, 2023 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Mesa Street Grill, located at 3800 North Mesa Street.

In an announcement sent to ABC-7, Chavez says she has already gained the endorsements of the El Paso Sheriff's Officers Association, El Paso Municipal Police Officers Association, and Combined Law Enforcement Association of Texas.

"I have a strong record of passing legislation with statewide and local impact, including creating a state felony for human trafficking, passing the 20-year retirement bill to include all El Paso County employees, establishing the inaugural funding for UTEP’s Center for Law and Border Studies and expanding the Texas Transportation Commission from 3 to 5 members, securing the first El Paso TxDOT commissioner," Chavez said in a statement Monday.
