Man accused of firing weapon along highway in viral video is a Fort Bliss Soldier
EL PASO, Texas -- Fort Bliss officials confirm the man identified by police who allegedly shot a semi-automatic firearm out of a moving car in El Paso, is a soldier on post.
Police said Jonathan Jay Oneal, 26, was arrested after he turned himself. The viral video was posted Saturday morning on social media and shared by the Instagram page maintained by Fit Fam EP.
The man, who is smiling, is seen firing about seven rounds into the sky as cars pass by in the opposite direction on the highway. The 20-second video has no audio.
"We are grateful that no one was injured and appreciate the efforts of everyone not willing to tolerate this type of behavior in our city," a message on the El Paso Police Department's official Twitter page read Monday. "Thank you for your willingness to step up to keep our community safe."
Oneal is charged with Discharging a Firearm in Certain Municipaliites. He was booked into the El Paso County Detention Center on a $50,000 bond.
Police confirmed Oneal was being processed by Gang Unit officers in a tweet posted online Monday night.
According to investigators, the incident happened late on Friday, December 20 along the Patriot Highway near Spur 601. The highway cuts through Fort Bliss and ties northeast and far east El Paso.
No injuries were reported.
Last month, police arrested two brothers for allegedly shooting out of another moving vehicle on an El Paso highway. Those arrests stemmed from a video of the incident posted to social media.
