BURNSVILLE, NC (WLOS ) — Two families in the mountains say they have more to be thankful for this holiday season thanks to the quick thinking of one young man.
Yancey County Emergency crews say Kyler Glover’s CPR training helped save a life this week.
Glover told News 13 he was working on a 4-H project at home on a snow day when he heard a loud bang. Glover said a man was there working on the family’s house that day.
“Originally, I thought that a tool fell down the stairs because they were working upstairs,” he recalled. “So, I just kind of stood there at first, and then my mom came out, and we kind of heard him gasping for breath.”
The man working on their house had a heart attack and fell into their Christmas tree.
Glover said he had learned CPR just months before this moment and performed it on the man for 25 minutes while his mother called 911.
“I never thought the first time doing CPR would be in my living room,” said Glover.
Glover and his mom said every time he would revive the man, his heart would stop again.
“At the time it was panic because we knew because he truly was in and out and his eyes were fixed,” said Glover’s mom Tracy.
Tracy and Kyler said the gravity of what happened sank in when paramedics arrived.
“Even though I’ve had CPR I truly don’t know if I could have stayed that calm as the way he did I’m just proud very very proud,” said Tracy Glover.
Kyler graduates in May and plans to become a doctor.
His parents said that’s pretty self evident.
“Blessed to have a son with his maturity and his confidence level to do what he done,” said Kyler’s dad Steven.
He’s already given the greatest gift of all.
“You never know how long someone is going to be here I mean he might could have made it and they might not have had him around this Christmas season,” said Kyler.
The man was eventually air-lifted to an area hospital.
The Glovers said they’ve learned the man has been taken off the ventilator and is expected to be okay.
