Biker Killed; 1 Of 2 Alleged Hit And Run Drivers Arrested
EL PASO, Tx. -Police release moreinformationregarding a fatalearly Sunday morning motorcycle accident ineast El Paso.
EPPD officials tell ABC-7 that 43-year old Cesar Edmundo Santos was on his way to work when a car hit him on Montana near Wedgewood. Officials added that Santos was struck by two cars.
Emergency crews tell ABC-7 Santos died on the scene of the wreck.
Both lanes of Montana were closed for several hours as EPPD Special Traffic Investigators pieced together what happened. According to EPPD Spokesman Chris Mears, “The scene is probably an eighth of a mile long…we have debris, vehicle parts, and (more)debris.”
Investigatorsbelieve Santos was hit from behind by a light-colored Honda. The impact caused Santos to fly off his bike.
According to police, while the Honda left the scene of the accident, a second car driven by William Vernacchio allegedly ran over Santos.
Police say the driver of the first car that hit Santos is still on the loose. Officials add that the first car might have been packed with teenagers. Police confirm to ABC-7 that two young men and one young woman were in the Honda.
Investigators say everyone in the 1st car that hit Santo could face some serious charges.
Mears tells ABC-7, “You know when you re involved in any collision, especially whenthere are serious injuries…you required to stay at the scene and attempt to render aid, call 911, do something, stay there…you’re not allowed to just leave and they’ve done that.”
Police are still looking for the first car that hit Santos and are asking the public for help. Mears described the Honda as “having front-end damage.”
EPPD officials tell ABC-7 that Vernacchio is behind bars charged with an accident involving personal injury or death.
