Mesilla Mayor To Address Sobriety Test ‘One Final Time’
MESILLA, N.M. – Mesilla Mayor Michael Cadena will address hisDWI test from two weeks ago at a town meeting Monday night.
Mayor Cadena says he will bring up the sobriety test one final time. He maintains his innocence, but public input about his use of the government vehicle may get heated. Cadena says he is upset that after ten years as Mayor, people are being quick to criticize him and point out his faults on the job.
He says he was authorized to use the government vehicle for personal use and was at Sunland Park on business. The police report obtained by ABC-7 says Cadena had blood-shot eyes and was swaying back and forth, but he was never arrested.
Cadena toldABC-7he wanted to put the entire situation behind him. “I cannot see how you can be found guilty when nothing happened andI wasn’t charged with anything. I want to move forward, and that’s whatI expect to talk about on [tonight]. I’m a little disappointed about my trustees. If they were in my situation,I would offer more support,” said the mayor.
Some Mesilla trustess have called for his resignation. Cadena says he has no plans of stepping down. Cadena says there’s no reasonbecause he was never arrested or charged with any offense.
Some mesilla trustees say the incident compromises the town’s best interest and that Cadena violated an ethics code by bringing the vehicle to the casino.
A fewMesilla residents said the seriousness of the whole incident is exaggerated. “It’s a rather minor thing compared to policy disputes that we’re going to have in the next few years.” said one resident.
“We all make mistakes sometimes and I’m not the one to judge,”added another. Now this incident has been put in front of District Attorney Susana Martinez. She toldABC-7 thatit is under investigation.
