An initial investigation revealed Cavazos and Terrazasengagedin a verbal argumentled to the shooting, authorities said.

Cavazos was captured by Mexican law enforcement officials in Torreon, Mexico in June. Surveillance for Cavazos was set up after investigators received a tip that the suspect was in that city.

Cavazos was then transported to Mexico City, where the country’s Federal Investigation Agency extradited him to the U.S.

Detectives in Mexico had been tracking Cavazos for two years and came close to capturing him on several occasions, said Jim Belknap, with the Criminal Investigation Division of the Sheriff’s Office.

“In perspective, it came as no surprise that Cavazos put up a struggle. We always listed him as armed and very dangerous, ” said Belknap. “We close this chapter of this case and wait for the trial.”
