Gov. Richardson Considering Snack Tax

Las Cruces, New Mexico -Soda and candy may soon cost you more if New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson gets his way.

Richardson says he’s considering a tax on candy and soda instead of bringing back a tax on all foods.

The tax is just one idea Richardson is mulling over to help New Mexico make up for its budgetary shortfall.

It’s a sweet deal that has New Mexicans considering what it means in their lives.

“I have a lotta grandkids and great-grandkids so there’s always soda or candy goin in our house but we have to support our economy somehow so just do the best we can,” said John Mack, who supports the tax idea.

Johnny Tillis also supports the tax.

“It doesn’t bother me ’cause I don’t use either one of ’em but people who use it aren’t gonna like it,” Tillis said.

Marsha Vickrey hasn’t made up her mind on the snack tax.

“I think we’re overspending at such a rate it’s not gonna help much,” she said.

Richardson repealed a tax on all food back in 2004. This is among other ways he is considering to help balance the budget. It will be discussed in a 30-day legislative session that begins next week.
