Chapin Coach Remembers Teen Killed In School Fall

Plenty of questions remain after an El Paso teenager was found dead Wednesday morning at a local middle school.

A custodian discovered the body of George Springer, 19, in a driveway between Bassett Middle and Clendenin Elementary around 6:45 a.m. on Wednesday.

Parents dropping off their children at the schools were greeted with red police tape and squad cars. Some were in the dark about what happened.

“They haven’t told me anything,” said one mother.

Others, had already heard the rumors.

“They say he fell,” said another woman.

Police say Springer fell off the roof of Bassett. What he was doing there, investigators have yet to reveal.

Police blocked off the area around the body to keep the children arriving for school from viewing the scene.

Springer was a 2008 graduate of Chapin High School. His basketball coach Tom Shuckitt remembers him as a good kid who’d been through a lot.

Springer’s younger brother Andy, 14, was killed in a car crash in 2007. Their father died when they were young.

“That’s what made me and George real close,” said Shukitt. “I was always trying to make sure he was going to have a very positive outlook on life.”
