Man Dies After Crashing Into San Elizario Ditch

A man is dead after crashing into a concrete irrigation canal in San Elizario Saturday morning.

El Paso County sheriff’s investigators said a passerby found a black car wedged upside down inside the ditch.

Deputies were dispatched to the scene at about 6:45 a.m. near the intersection of Chicken Ranch Road and Pampero Road.

Officials said the man, Mario Cruz, 26, was dead when deputies arrived.

Investigators said Cruz missed the curve, drove off the road, slammed into the concrete wall and his Ford Focus then landed on its roof.

Authorities said Cruz was not wearing a seat belt. They said speed and alcohol are suspected factors in the crash.
