Annual Sun Bowl Parade To Feature CBS’ Bill Macatee, Captain America
Freedom is not free, but a chance to meet Captain America is.
The First Avenger will make an appearance at the 75th annual FirstLight Federal Credit Union Sun Bowl Thanksgiving Parade, which begins at 10 a.m.
The theme of this year’s theme is “75 Years of Fun in the Sun,” and the Grand Marshal is CBS Sports Analyst Bill Macatee. The 1949 Bowie High School baseball team, which won the state championship, was named the honorary grand marshal.
?We are grateful to have a great partnership with the Sun Bowl Association and appreciate the help of Tom Andrews from Goodwill in getting a Grand Marshal like Bill Macatee to represent our parade that has become a tradition in our community,? said Karl Murphy, president and CEO of FirstLight Federal Credit Union
Macatee, who was born in El Paso, has been a CBS Sports analyst since 1995 where he called NFL play-by-play at the network for more than a decade and currently covers the Masters, the PGA Championship, Wimbledon, the U.S. Open Tennis Championships and Olympic games amongst many other elite sporting events.
“It’s hard to find the words to express what an honor it is to be included in an event that was so much a part of my childhood growing up in El Paso,? Macatee said. ?I have been lucky throughout my career in television to witness some of the most memorable moments in sports history; but for me personally, being the grand marshal of the FirstLight Federal Credit Union Sun Bowl Parade will be special beyond words.”
The parade route, which is about 2.7 miles long, begins at Montana Avenue at Ochoa Street, and ends at Copia. There are about 100 entries, including floats, giant helium balloons, equestrian units, clowns, marching bands, drum and bugle corps units from Mexico, royalty, dignitaries, celebrity Grand Marshal, and a wide variety of specialty units from Mexican / Indian dancers to military ceremonial units
According to the Sun Bowl Parade webpage, the El Paso Downtown Lions Club organized the Parade in 1935. It was held on New Year?s Day from 1936 until 1978, when the event was rescheduled for Thanksgiving Day. The holiday pageant is planned, coordinated and produced by volunteer efforts and draws thousands of spectators every year. The Sun Bowl Parade, one of the largest community event in the west Texas, New Mexico and Mexico area, brings together service clubs and civic organizations as well as all sectors of business and industries within the community.
