Insights Science Museum will have to move out by February of 2013

It wont be long before the Insights Science Museum has to shut its doors.

Insights has officially gotten their eviction notice.They willhave to vacate the building early next year and board members for the museum are feeling some frustration.

“I don’t want to see us close our doors,” said Aaron Velasco, president of the board for the Insights Science Museum.

He tellsABC-7 he’s not against downtown revitalization.

“We’re not necessarily opposed to the stadium, but what’s really important for us is that we keep the doors open”, said Velasco.

VelascotellsABC-7 closing the doors could send the wrong message.

“If you close our doors or don’t give us another option, it basically sends a message, whats the value of education?”, said Velasco.

Velasco tells ABC-7the city has contacted the museum but it’s only to keep talks on the table.

“We’ve had various conversations, no commitment and that’s what we’re looking for, we need a commitment that indeed the city’s commited to keep Insight viable”, said Velasco.

Now more than ever, time is of the essence, Velasco tells ABC-7,”If we don’t get an extra facility or another facility we will have to close.”

This doesn’t necessarily mean it would be gone forever.

Several groups including the Paso Del Norteare working on a solution.”There’s various groups that have come forward and offered to help us with transitional space and to plan for the future”, said Velasco,”Nothing is official nothing has been agreed upon but the conversation has been started.”

There is also funds allocated for the museum in the upcoming bond election in November.

“If the bond is past there will be money for a children’s center”, said Velasco.

He can’t stress enough,”I think it’s critically important that we are are open and we serve the children of El Paso,” Velasco said.

Velasco told ABC-7 their eviction is set for Feb. 14th, the museum’s 33th anniversary.
