ABC-7 Weather Academy held at Scotsdale Elementary

As part of a community outreach plan, ABC-7’s StormTRACK meteorologists hold “Weather Academies” every few months.

The academy is offered as a way to connect the station with local schools, while teaching students about weather.

ABC-7 StormTRACK meteorologist Krystal Klei visited Scotsdale Elementary Monday morning.

The academy began with a powerpoint presentation.

The presentation explained a few Borderland weather phenomenons, as well as a few national weather events.

Specifically, students learned about cloud types, precipitation forms, dust devils, haboobs, hurricanes, and tornadoes.

The students also watched a forecast, and learned about what goes on behind the scenes.

Students were taught how meteorologist make their forecast and graphics, as well as how they know where to point.

A time-lapse video of a severe dust storm, known as a haboob, that rolled through Phoenix, Arizona was played for the students.

The video gained a lot of “ohs” and “ahs.”

To finish off the academy, Klei and two student helpers did an experiment.

The experiment, which taught students how clouds formed, involved a large glass jar, warm water, and ice.

The academy came to a close with a question and answer session.
