Largest skate park in region opens in NE El Paso

Skateboarders have a reason to celebrate as the city has finally opened the region’s newest and largest skate park.
The ribbon cutting was at 8 a.m. Thursday at the Northeast Regional Park at 11270 McCombs Dr. City Rep. Carl Robinson and the City of El Paso Parks and Recreation Department officially opened the park, which is 25,000 square feet in total.

The park has a number of different features, including a snake course, street-style area, and a huge “capsule” which skaters can go completely inverted on.

Back in March, ABC 7 previewed the park’s work so far which project managers estimated at around 85 percent done at the time. Workers were finishing up the painting and sealing of the park’s pavement and putting the final electrical components in place.

Bond project manager Rick Venegas said that once the park was completed it would offer challenges for skaters of all skill levels.

“This is going to be one of the more elite skate parks in the region,” Venegas said. “Our contractor is Metlock commercial contractors, but their subcontractor is California Skate Parks, and they’ve set up X-Games competitions all over the world.”

The total project budget was $1.6 million, paid for by the 2012 Quality of Life Bond. The completed park is twice the size of the Carolina Skate Park, which was previously the largest skate park in El Paso
