More construction coming for El Paso International
The construction will continue at El Paso International Airport. A new plan is calling for even more work, this time on the smaller American Airlines side of the concourse.
A city bid request call for to expand Concourse A and and the back lot leading to the baggage claim area. The project could start this summer and last a year or more, while construction on things like the rental car facility continue as well.
“So just making it as,” said Monica Lombrana, director of aviation for El Paso International. “Doing aesthetically as well as operationally, improvements to that entire concourse.”
The smaller concourse could be seeing up to a third of all airport passengers as American Airlines and US Airways merge. The plan is to make more space and amenities available for them.
Under the city’s bid request, 3,000 square feet will be added for more restrooms and stores, and add floor to ceiling glass walkway windows.
The baggage back lot will also be completely redone
“This area here is just in terms of the area that the airlines use to deliver the bags to the bag make-up area,” Lombrana said. “And so we need to redo it in terms of the pavement, make it a smoother ride for the airlines.”
As for overall traffic at the airport, Lombrana said staff are still working under the incentive program approved by city council in February, meeting with airlines to convince them that El Paso can support more flights.
