UTEP’s Opening of Miner Canyon
and i’m rick cabrera. not your traditional dormitory. that’s what some utep students are saying, when they speak about the newest addition to the student housing choices. miner canyon housing complex is now open, and residents are moving in for the fall semester. abc-7’s iris lopez is live at miner canyon and she gives us a tour of what utep students can expect from the new dorms, iris? it’s 14 years since miner village went up … that was utep’s last brand new housing complex. in 2010, the university remodeled some existing apartments and called that project “mine heights.” today – the innovation continued when the doors to miner canyon opened. miner canyon offers suite style rooms to all its residents. every room includes a small kitchen, living areas, and shareable bathrooms. each unit can house four to six residents, and a single bedroom dorm is also available. cost of living in the dorms ranges from 500 to 600 dollars per month. the new campus also offers “living learning laboratories for students to interact with one another. utep hopes amenities like these will help turn the university into a tier-one national research institution. the new dorms also serve as a way for students to become more independent, and involved. “all the research shows, an certainly our experiences that students who live on campus are more engaged in student organizations their grade points tend to be higher and they’re just much more active students.” miner canyon houses up to 352 residents, and the opening of the new housing complex brings the total number of students living on the utep campus to nearly 1- thousand. a reunion to rember today in el paso. tears of joy from little diego sanchez
