Playboy Magazine is going PG-13

Call it a sign of the times. The magazine that was know for showing so much is about to show a lot less.

Come March, Playboy Magazine will take the nude out of its new magazine design. The reason behind the move? The internet.

Nudity is something that is everywhere now-a-days. What used to be only offered in magazines can now be found for free online or on your mobile phone. Meaning what Playboy did all these years just isn’t special anymore.

In 2010, ABC News spoke with Hefner about how the internet has effect magazine sales: “I think it has had a dramatic impact on playboy. People get their information in different ways now. “

Back in 1975, the magazine sold 7 million copies a month. Today- that number is down to 800,000.

In 2014, Playboy relaunched a new online website with a “safe for work” strategy, meaning the site featured no nudity.

The new strategy seemed to work–with playboy seeing a 258% jump in unique visitors, and web traffic increased from 4 million to 16 million users per month.

Could the PG-13 strategy do the same for magazine sales? We won’t know until March of next year, but one thing is for sure- When a person mentions that they only buy Playboy Magazine for the articles, they just might be telling the truth.
