this is all the news you need to start your sunday, january 3rd. abc-7’s “good morning el paso weekend starts right now! good morning and thank you for joing us… i’m andrew j. polk. we’re getting more information on a number of deaths happening over the weekend… including a single-vehicle rollover crash in far east el paso. we now know there were 5 people in the car at the time. the crash happened yesterday around 6 o’clock on the 27- hundred block of jobe road — that’s a private road near montana vista. that’s where police say a red f-150 was driving when the driver tried to make a left turn, but didn’t make it… instead driving over an embankment and rolling over. five people were in the truck… two of which died at the scene. the three others were taken to an area hospital where another passenger was prnounced dead. no word yet on who the passengers were. the sheriff’s office is still investigating. the el paso police department’s “crime against persons unit” i investigating what they say is a “suspicious death” after a m dies in an apartment fire. the fire happened after 4:30 yesterday afternoon on the 1800-block of kentucky. once fire crews arrived, they battled the minor fire. that’s when they found a man in his 40’s. he was taken to sierra medical center where he was pronounced dead. the man has not been identified at this time. but police tell us there are six apartments in the complex and they confirm the man lived there. it’s unclear whether or not he died because of the fire: “it’s still under investigation we’ll be coordinating with the fire marshals office and the police department for the exact cause of the death and the cause of the fire itself.” the fire marshal’s office is investigating. we’ll share more information as we get it. …stormtrack weather now! let’s get your first forecast with stormtracker iris lopez .synopsis… after a cold morning …temperatures will peak above 50 degrees in most of the lowlands today due to abundant sunshine. clouds will start to increase this evening in advance of the first of several pacific storms. showers will spread eastward across the area monday afternoon through tuesday morning. precipitation episodes will be about 24 hours apart into the weekend …with the storm friday evening into saturday morning being the coldest. snow levels will drop from 6000 feet early in the week to below 5000 feet friday night. heavy precipitation is not expected from each individual storm. as people adjust to new laws in the new year, businesses and residents are having to deal with new rights – and restrictions… as it comes to open carry of handguns. buildings and businesses have the choice to restrict the open or concealed carry of handguns on the property. under the new laws, a business must display the correct signs to restrict the different kinds of handgun carry. for instance – at the fountains at farah, they have the seciton 30.07 signs posted at every enterance into the property, meaning that only open carry is banned throughout this retail complex. whatever a property owner chooses, signs are available online and at local sign makers … and must meet strict legal guidelines for size and language to have the force of law. it’s been weeks since paris was victim to deadly terrorist attacks, and while the city is recovering it hasn’t forgotten what it went through. abc-7 reporter julio- cesar chavez was in france over the holidays, he has the details on how things in the country are holding up. it’s a story you’ll see only on abc-7. this is file video from abc news after the paris attacks. things are very different now, people have returned to the streets and locals say they can go about their lives comfortably, but a few noticeable changes remain. there was a great show of military force, which is something i hadn’t seen before. rosa rodela is a local french teacher who has traveled regularly to france. she’s talking about the military police, who had small details patrolling popular areas like town plazas and tourist destinations. the mps, however, seemed to be serving their purpose. the first time i saw them i was a little freaked out because there’s these guys walking around with berets and huge guns and all that stuff. but i felt like if anything happens they’re there locals told us for the most part their everyday lives weren’t really affected. but some security measures did cut into their days. one night as we headed into the metro everyone was evacuated from the station, officials saying it was a security prevention. whenever there is a package left if somebody forgets something in the metro they immediately shut down the metro, it’s a suspicious package, and so that’s a whole lot more added security than there would be before. france wasn’t the only country affected by the attacks. security in several italian cities was also higher than usual, with military police watching out for locals and tourists. two skiers who went missing at ski apache are safe again. the two men were found yesterday with no injuries. they were not identified… only described as two men from roswell, ages 23 and 27. they were reported missing after they never made it back to their vehicle on firday. authorities didn’t say where they found them, but that they are safe and healthy. utep is changing the way it teaches some engineering students. we’re talking about utep’s new engineering leadership degree program, or e-lead. the el paso inc reports that the program is trying to produce a new kind of engineer… one that is skilled in multiple areas… including business, entrepreneurship, leadership, and teamwork. the goal is to keep up with changing job markets so students will be able to cross boundaries when they need to. there are about 70 students enrolled in the e-lead program … and that number is expected to grow. don’t forget to pick up this week’s issue of the el paso inc. in it, you’ll find details on stories like this one… which we just shared with you: how utep is changing the game when it comes to engineering — and changing what engineers do after they graduate. why the tiguas are getting into the wine business, at $35 a bottle. and what made el paso the choice of businessman who makes upscale belts for men. el paso inc. is online at elpasoinc.com, and available for home and business delivery. call 534- 4422 to subscribe. the snow may be largely gone around our area… but coming up on good morning el paso weekend… the impact is definitley being felt by dairy farmers in the region – and could soon be seen in the dairy isle. wipe vo and later – the latest on the missing el paso police k-9 – gone since new years celebrations spooked it out of it’s kennel. it is , right now we’ll take a live look at traffic this morning: and in stormtrack weather, iris!
